Why do homeowners need a battery storage with their solar panel system?

A home battery storage allows consumers to store the excess energy that their PV panels produce and use it at a time that is suitable for them.

Most households have high demand for energy in the mornings and evenings, however solar generation is at it’s peak at mid-day. By installing a battery this allows the energy that is generated to be stored and used at those high demand times.

Enviroplanet is a recommended installer by GivEnergy.

How do I get the best out of the battery?

To get the best use of the battery there may need to be a shift in how you run your electrical appliances at home. For instance, running your washing machine and tumble drier at the same time will use more energy than a customer’s solar panels are likely to generate. However, if you use the washing machine and then the tumble drier it is likely that they will both run from the solar energy being generated or stored in the battery.

Can I claim Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments if I have a battery?

Yes! Any energy produced by the solar panels that is not used is stored in the battery, or used in the home can be sent back to the grid. This is the energy that you can claim SEG payments for. Enviroplanet provide the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certificate and approval from the Distributing Network Operator for you to present to your Energy provider to claim SEG payments.

If you already have a PV system in place then you may already be claiming Feed-In Tariff (FIT) payment. You cannot claim FIT and SEG payments.

What capacity in KW is the battery?

Enviroplanet stock batteries in a range of kilowatts. We start with a 5.2kw and range up to 13.5kw all in one battery and inverter. Our most popular battery is the 9.5kw for the storage space it has and for the budget homeowners set. It is possible to install more than one battery this gives the power from the solar-energy system an additional place to be stored.

What does an inverter do?

An inverter is a vital piece of equipment in a solar energy system and is needed whether you have battery storage or not.

The inverter, whether this is a hybrid inverter or PV inverter, converts direct current (DC) electricity, which is what solar panels produces and the battery stores, and converts it to alternating current (AC) electricity which is what is used in the home and provided by the grid. In DC the electricity flow in one direction at one voltage. In AC, electricity flows in both directions around a circuit and the voltage changes form positive to negative. The inverter regulates the flow of the electricity that has been generated by the PV panels.

There are 3 main types of inverters:

  • Hybrid inverter
  • PV inverter
  • Micro inverter

If you are choosing a green energy system with battery storage then you will need a hybrid inverter.

If you have PV only then a PV inverter is sufficient. If you decide to add a battery at a later date then an AC coupled inverter would also be added.

Although micro inverters are high yielding they are also high maintenance – if one fails it is difficult to distinguish the failing part.

Is there a combined battery and inverter?

As of June 2023, GivEnergy have released their All In One – a battery and inverter combined.

This battery is 13.5kw in size and primarily works as an on grid system. When used with the GivEnergy Gateway it also has the ability that, should there be an electricity cut, the All In One can switch to its Emergency Power Supply in 20 milliseconds. This would mean that the PV can carry on generating during a power cut and the battery will continue to store excess generation.

Will the battery work during a power cut?

Enviroplanet can fit an Emergency Power Supply to the PV system and battery that would allow some power to continue being used in the home.
An alternative to this is the GivEnergy all in one and gateway that will maintain the power during a power cut and has a switchover time of 20milliseconds.  This installation would mean that the PV panels can keep producing power and the battery will store the power even when there is no energy from the grid.

Product Warranties

Batteries and Inverters (hybrid inverters and PV inverters) come with warranties attached to them. For customers who purchase GivEnergy equipment this can be viewed on the GivEnergy app. For other manufacturers the equipment needs to be registered to receive the warranty.

What is the difference between a battery and an EESS?

There isn’t one! A battery is an Electrical Energy Storage System (EESS) – the terms can be used for the same thing.

How do batteries work with inverters?

Inverters take the direct current (DC) from the battery and convert it into alternative current (AC) so that the energy can then used in the home.

Do I need an inverter with battery storage?

Yes. The inverter converts DC energy from the battery to AC power that is used within a home.

Does an inverter use a lot of electricity?

An inverter uses a small amount of electricity to convert energy from DC to AC; the efficiency of inverters is more than 92%
