Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need planning permission to install air conditioning?

For most cases the installation of air conditioning falls under ‘Permitted Development’ , as the external unit will have little impact on the property and surroundings no planning permission is needed.

The units must meet the following regulations:

  • It sits over one meter clear of any property boundaries
  • It sits over one meter clear of the edge of a flat roof
  • It is not installed on a pitched roof
  • It is under 0.6m3 
  • There is no wind turbine at the property

There are some exceptions to the rule and if your property falls in to one of the following categories it is best to check with your local planning department:

  • An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • A National Park
  • A Conservation Area
  • A World Heritage Site
Do air conditioning units also provide heat?

Modern air conditioning units also include heat pumps that provide heating as well as cooling the air.

What is F Gas?

HFCs, CFCs and HCFCs all come under the umbrella term ‘F Gas’. These are gases ofen used in refrigeration equipment including air conditioning and have long been associated with contributing to ozone depletion and global warming.

EU legislation means that these gases must be limited in use and the release of them is strictly controlled. If an air conditioning unit contains more than 3kg of an F Gas then, legally, the owner of the system must arrange for inspections at least once a year. If it is more than 30kg then the inspection must take place every quarter.
