What is SEG?
Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments are made by energy companies to small scale generators who export electricity back to the National Grid.
How do I apply for SEG payments?
You apply directly to a SEG tariff provider, this does not have to be the same company who provides your energy – Ofgem list SEG tariff providers on their website. Once you have decided who you would like to provide your tariff, you then apply to the company. The energy company usually request your MCS certificate and G98 or G99 certificate – the company who installs your green energy technology must be MCS registered for you to be able to apply for SEG.
The energy company will then apply for an export MPAN number for you – this is a unique number to identify your meter and will measure the amount of energy you export to the grid.
Once your MPAN is enrolled, you will send the energy company a meter reading (and sometimes a photo to validate this), you will then be paid a rate for the amount of energy you export.
Which green technologies are eligible for SEG payments?
- solar photovoltaic (PV)
- wind turbines
- hydro
- anaerobic digestion
- micro CHP generator
Can I have FIT and SEG payments?
The Feed-in Tariff (FIT) scheme closed on 31 March 2019 – if you currently receive FIT, you can remain on FIT for your green energy but they are not accepting new applications, these are now for SEG payments. It is possible to have a new system installed alongside an existing system and claim both FIT and SEG payments.
